On this, the district court of Surat convicted Rahul Gandhi on Thursday. Rahul Gandhi was present in the court while delivering the verdict of the district court, who had reached Surat today itself.

Rahul said – I only speak against corruption
The Surat district court, while giving its verdict in the Modi surname defamation case, held Rahul Gandhi guilty of defamation under section 504 of the IPC. This defamation case was registered against him under two sections 499 and 504. Last week itself, after hearing the final arguments of both the sides, District Sessions Judge HH Verma had reserved the verdict. On Thursday, after sentencing Rahul Gandhi to two years in the same case, the judge immediately released him on bail for 30 days. The court has given this bail to Rahul Gandhi to appeal in the higher court against the decision of the District Sessions Court. During this, Rahul Gandhi can also file a petition for permanent bail. While pronouncing the verdict, the judge asked Rahul Gandhi, ‘You have something to say!’ On this, Rahul Gandhi said, ‘I always raise my voice against corruption. I deliberately did not say anything against anyone. No one was harmed by my statement.

Purnesh Modi had filed a criminal defamation case
On 13 April 2019, Rahul Gandhi arrived in Kolar, Karnataka to address an election rally. Why do all the thieves have the same surname?’ BJP MLA and former minister Purnesh Modi had filed a criminal defamation case against this controversial comment of former Congress President Rahul Gandhi. Surat court had reserved the decision last week
