KCR criticizes Modi government for banning BBC documentary

Hyderabad:
Chief Minister of Telangana K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Sunday slammed the Narendra Modi government for banning BBC’s documentary on Gujarat riots and said it is not good for democracy.

He raised questions in the assembly regarding the restrictions imposed on the documentary.

KCR said, when BBC aired a documentary on Godhra riots, it was banned. Ashwini Upadhyay, a lawyer, filed a case in the Supreme Court to ban the BBC in India. Why so much arrogance?

Where will this madness take us? Is it an honor for the country to have a BJP person file a case in the Supreme Court to ban BBC? What will the world think of us. Why this intolerance?

The Chief Minister also remarked that in a country as big as India, mistakes happen and they should be accepted. He said that in a democracy it is not appropriate to ban critics or send them to jail.

He said, one should have patience and tolerance. None is permanent as we depend on the mercy of the people to come to power.

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) president said such behavior would not be tolerated by the people for long.

They would be in ruins after 2024, he remarked. We all saw what happened to Indira Gandhi through the movement of Loknayak Jai Prakash Narayan and the spark that followed in the country.

KCR also criticized Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s outburst over the absence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s photo at a ration shop in Kamareddy district. He said, the Finance Minister of the country fought with a poor ration dealer. He threatened her. In fact, why should PM Modi’s picture be displayed?

The BRS leader also wanted to know why the Modi government is not conducting the census in the country. He informed that the process of census started way back in 1871 and it continued uninterrupted till 2011.

He told that it did not stop even during the two world wars. KCR said that it is only through the census that the government comes to know what is the situation in the country. He alleged that the Modi government is not conducting the census because it is afraid of knowing the facts.

He said that people belonging to backward classes and scheduled castes are also demanding caste census. He said, the SC population was fixed at 15 per cent long ago, but with authority I can say that it has now crossed 17 per cent. In some states it has even crossed 19 per cent.
