India’s First Underwater Train Tunnel: More than one success is being achieved in our country. In this episode, the metro rail will now pass under water in metropolitan Kolkata. Prepared on the lines of the London-Paris corridor
This tunnel has been designed on the lines of the London-Paris corridor of ‘Eurostar’. This tunnel is being prepared 33 meters from the ground and 13 meters below the river bed. The tunnel connects East Howrah Maidan to IT hub Salt Lake Sector V in the west. It is expected that trains will start running from the corridor in December 2023.

According to the news agency PTI, Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation’s General Manager (Civil) Shailesh Kumar told that it was necessary to build this tunnel for the East-West Corridor of Kolkata Metro. This is important in many ways because due to the dense population here and technical problems, the way has been made from inside the river. He said, ‘The construction of this tunnel on the route between Howrah and Sealdah will save time.
